About Our Department

NIE always encourages sports in a big way. In fact, the ideals of the NIE Founders that sport should be a part of engineering education has been maintained even today. The department caters to almost 25 disciplines of Sports and Physical Education for both Men and Women. It has excellent state-of-the-art Infrastructure for Indoor Sports and provides excellent facilities in terms of equipment.
This has been reflected in NIE being ranked among top ten Institutions in VTU Sports and Cultural activities. It has won Rs. 1.00 Lakh Cash Award from VTU four times in 2002-2003, 2008-2009, 2013-2014, 2018-19. (Eligibility only once in five academic years for top ten Institutions affiliated to VTU) through its excellent performance in Sports activities.
We cater to almost all recognized Sports disciplines, NIE is good in Badminton, Table Tennis, Chess, Handball, Kho-Kho, Weight Lifting, Cricket, Volleyball, Football Basketball, Softball, Baseball, Weight Lifting, Power Lifting teams have won laurels, recently we have introduced Archery, Taekwondo, Netball.

The Institution has one state of art Indoor Sports Complex which can accommodate 6 Badminton Courts with separate seating enclosures for spectators.
Usage by Students
The NIE Inter Branch Competitions are conducted every year in Volleyball, Basketball, Kho-Kho, Kabaddi, Throw ball, Ball Badminton, Softball, Baseball, Badminton, Table Tennis, Chess, Carom and Yoga.
There are about 1000 students taking part in the said disciplines. Apart from the above Steel Sports meet involving Weight Lifting, Power Lifting and Best Physique for NIE Group of Institutions are held in which "Steel Man" and Mr.NIE Group titles are presented.
Annual Athletic Meet for the NIE Group of Institutions is held at NIE North Campus every year. NIE organizes Inter Collegiate Tournaments (under VTU as well as Mysore City Inter Collegiate Tournaments).

Facilities available at NIE
Outdoor Sports:
Volleyball 30x20 Metres, Basketball 32X22Metres, Handball 40X25 Metres, Throwball 32X15Mtrs separate at Golden Jubilee Block Sports ground.
30-yard Tennis Ball Cricket, 5 a Side Football, Softball, Kho - Kho, Kabaddi, Ball Badminton, and Archery will be played on the same area of 40 MetresX40 Metres by sharing the space one after the other.
Indoor Sports:
NIE Diamond Jubilee Indoor Sports Complex 26X36Mtrs Playing area
4 Badminton Courts, 3 Table Tennis Tables and 3 Carrom Boards.
Yoga and Chess will be practiced on stage 22X16Mtrs and Green Rooms.7X5 Mtrs.
Taekwondo, Judo and Wrestling in Cellar 30X15 Mtrs.
Fitness Center 30'X40'
Weight Lifting, Power Lifting & Best Physique training is provided.
