Department of Mechanical Engineering
The undergraduate program in Mechanical Engineering, established in 1958, is designed to provide broad competence in basic Mechanical Engineering and provide a deeper knowledge of major selected areas of current interest. The core curriculum consists of basic courses in the Thermal Science, Design Engineering, Manufacturing and Management Sciences. The advanced courses are offered as electives an a wide range of areas like Advanced Heat Transfer, Non Traditional Machining, Robotics, Theory of Elasticity, Computer Integrated Manufacturing, Management Information Systems, Finite Element Methods, Non Conventional Energy Sources, etc. The Department has well equipped Basic Laboratories and Workshops like IC Engines Lab, Measurements Lab, Dynamic Lab, Heat Transfer Lab, and Machine Shop. The academic achievements of the students of this stream in the University examinations are outstanding and since 1962 the Department has bagged over 150 ranks. The highly qualified faculty are actively engaged in research and consultancy works in the areas of Composite Materials, Fuels and Lubricants and Energy Systems Engineering. As a part of Industry-Institute liasoning, every year 6-7 batches of students carry out their project work in industries situated in and around Mysore. The students also take up projects in National Laboratories like NAL, HAL, etc in Bangalore. FacilitiesThe Department has a Computer Center with the latest PC's. Software facility includes AutoCAD Release 2000 with 3-D Studio and Visual Link. CAD-CAM Software such as NISA, PROE 2000,ANSYS, Solid Works, IDEAS are available. The Department has maintained a library having over 2000 books on various topics. The Department has established centers like Entrepreneurship Development Cell (EDC), Center for Material Research (CMR) to carry out studies on Composite Materials.
