Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering

Started in the year 1956, the graduate course in Electrical and Electronics Engineering encompasses the various aspects of Electrical and Electronics fields such as Power and Industrial Electronics, Advance Control System, Solid State Relays and Protection, Microprocessor Application and Computer Application to Power System Studies, High Voltage Studies.

The Department has traditional and modern laboratories such as Machines Lab, Power System Simulation Lab, High Voltage Lab, Relay Lab, Circuits and simulation Lab, Microprocessor Lab and Electric Workshop. The Department is engaged in research activities, mainly in Power System, Energy Management and Distribution System. It has contacts for R & D work with Electrical Engineering Division of IISc, Bangalore, State Electricity Board, Karnataka Power Corporation and CPRI, Bangalore. Presently, the department has taken up several R&D projects funded by UGC and AICTE Organisations. The Department also undertakes testing of motors, transformers and Insulation of electrical appliances, Insulation Boards etc., as a part of consultancy work.

Facilities

The Department has maintained a Computer Centre with state of art computers, MATLAB software package, MIPOWER software package for study and analysis of large power systems. The department has been well equipped with electrical machines like Induction motors, Synchronous motors and Transformers other than imported equipments like AC modulator servo system, Process control simulator, the department has well developed Microprocessor and Power electronics lab. The department is proud to have recognized HV testing facilities under dry and rain conditions and impulse testing of insulators. HV lab is equipped with 400KV impulse generator, 300KV HV transformer and 100KV DC set. Recently the department has started testing and auditing division under the name CEMATEA (Centre for Energy Management and Test systems for Electrical Apparatus) attached to research and consultancy cell at the institution. The department is a well recognized center for academic research. It has already produced 8 Ph.Ds and 9 candidates are working under VTU programme.
