NIE CNC Training Centre
The Indian industry has a great need for trained engineers and technicians, who could quickly adapt to the demands of the industry. Keeping this in mind, the National Institute of Engineering has, in recent times, taken steps to create advanced training facilities to train not only our engineering students, but also other students, technicians and practicing engineers.
The CNC Training Centre created by the Institute is one such facility which aims to provide training on par with the requirements of the industry. The CNC Training Centre was established in the year 2006 through grants procured from the Technical Education Quality Improvement Program – I (a World Bank & MHRD Initiative) and suitable infrastructure was set through funds from the NIE Managing Committee. The Centre was established under the leadership of Dr. N. V. Raghavendra (Professor & Current Head, Dept of Mechanical Engineering) and Dr. B. K. Sridhara Raghavendra (Professor & former Head, Dept of Mechanical Engineering)
The Centre was set up by the Department of Mechanical Engineering through the procurement of 2 production-ready Computer Numerical Controlled Machining Centres form Ace Manufacturing Systems, Bangalore. A Vertical Machining Centre (AMS Winner) and a Horizontal Turning Centre (AMS Cub) are being used to train the students on fundamental aspects of CNC technology.
This particular training program, designed for final and pre-final year engineering students of the Mechanical Engineering Sciences, will impart hands on training on Programming and Operation of the CNC Lathe and CNC Machining centre. The course is a blend of both theory and practical sessions and is spread over 24 three hour sessions conducted during evening hours and semester end vacations. The course is being conducted by a dedicated team of teaching and non-teaching faculty of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The centre enjoys the complete support of the Principal, Dr. G. L. Shekar, and the NIE Managing Committee.
The unique feature of NIE CNC centre is that a well-trained team of senior students are involved in training groups of junior students. The program has increased in popularity in the recent past and since September of 2012, twenty three batches comprising of more than 500 students from colleges like NIE, SJCE, VVCE, VVIET, MIT in Mysuru, RVCE & MSRIT in Bengaluru, MCE – Hassan and NMAMIT – Karkala have been trained. In the ten years the CNC Training Centre has been operational; more than 750 candidates have been trained in 34 batches. The training is also open to operators of conventional lathes & mailing machines.
The 25th batch was completed in April of 2015. This significant achievement was marked with an expert lecture by Mr. L. S. Umesh, CEO of Ace Manufacturing Systems, Bangalore. Mr. Umesh spoke about the Recent Advances in CNC Technology. At the event, current & past trainers of the centre were felicitated for their dedication to the centre.
Since its establishment, both UG and PG students have involved themselves in the Centre through the pursuance of their final year projects. So far, seven groups of Under Graduate students have successfully completed their projects which include the Design & Fabrication of Fixtures; Implementation of Automated Mechanisms, Development of Advanced Programming Practices; Integration of the Machines with Programming Software and the Study of Lean Capabilities of the Centre.
Looking to the future, the aim of the Centre is to expand of course curriculum to include newer and more complex exercises, increase the implementation of innovative & effective projects which would prove beneficial to both the Department & the Institute and conduct advanced, long term training programs & workshops in collaboration with the Automation Laboratory at the Department.
Sunil Gaekwad, Assistant Professor, Dept of Mechanical Engineering is the Coordinator of the CNC Training Centre. More information can be obtained at the offices of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, NIE.
