Milestones

The NIE is one of the only two private Engineering colleges in Karnataka started before the independence. Having completed more than six decades of fruitful existence, NIE’s history is replete with moments of glory. Here is an attempt to list the eventful moments which make its history a unique one.

  • 1946 – College started by a ‘three man army’ of retired engineers, in a hut in the premises of a high school.
  • 1949 – First batch of Diploma students pass out.
  • 1959 – Sir M. Vishveshwarayya visits NIE.
  • 1950 – All AMIE students get the status of being students of B.E.
  • 1951 – Ramaswamy Block was built
  • 1952 – College student magazine launched.
  • 1953 – First batch of BE students pass out.
  • 1957 – HH Maharaja Jayachamaraja Wodeyar visits the college.
  • 1959 – Dr. S. Radhakrishnan lays the foundation stone for the new block.
  • 1959 – 1.82 acres of land (NIE Boys Hostel) taken for lease from Mysore Sandalwood Oil Factory for 99 years.
  • 1962 – NIE Student EAS Prasanna gets selected to the Indian Cricket team to play against England and then tour West Indies.
  • 1963 – 7.67 acres of land (Sports ground) taken for lease from Mysore Sandalwood Oil Factory for 30 years.
  • 1965 – Sri. M. C. Chagla declares open the Administrative Block.
  • 1966 – R. Natarajan (1958), K. Rajagopal, Narasimharajan (1960-64), all students of NIE, chosen to represent the country in basket ball.
  • 1967- Governor His Highness Dharmavira inaugurates PG Courses in Civil & Electrical branches.
  • 1968 – Kum. Pavana selected to Indian Kho-Kho team.
  • 1983 – Student magazine Mysore Engineer’s 25th issue brought out.
  • 1984 – The navigation channel at Kandla Port in Gujarat named Satyanarayana Shogal as SHOGAL Channel, after its engineer Sri. Shogal, an alumnus of NIE.
  • 1992 – Alumni EAS Prasanna and Sri. G N Rao honoured with Padmashree.
  • 1993 – Dr. N. V. Chandrashekar Swamy made the Director of IIT, Madras.
  • 1996 – Golden Jubilee Celebrations:
    • 50 lectures by eminent alumni
    • National Level Symposium in four topics of present day interest conducted.
    • The new lecture hall complex housing 30 classrooms and other facilities constructed.
  • 2001 – Sri. N. R. Narayana Murthy of Infosys Technologies Ltd., named one among the top ten personalities in the business world.
